Ice retention depends on four things, and only one is the brand name on the lid.
Retention figures are always given under specific test conditions. The WHO Prequalification programme, for example, measures vaccine cold-box performance at a constant 43°C ambient temperature, with a defined pack conditioning procedure (WHO/PQS/E004/CB01.3). A consumer claim of "5 days" and a lab result at 43°C are different numbers, so ask what conditions a stated figure assumes.
The handle carries the full loaded weight, and that weight is larger than most people estimate. A cooler is mostly ice and water, and one litre of water weighs about one kilogram. A 50 L box filled with ice and drinks can easily exceed 25 kg.
For reference, the NIOSH lifting equation sets a recommended maximum of 23 kg for ideal, two-handed lifting conditions (NIOSH Publication 94-110). That is a good ceiling for any cooler one person will carry by hand. Above it, choose one of these options:

The outer shell is usually HDPE or polypropylene. Both resist impact, and UV-stabilized resins keep colors from fading outdoors. The interior is what touches your food, so it needs to be food-grade. In the United States, polyethylene for food contact falls under FDA regulation 21 CFR 177.1520. In Germany, the equivalent framework is LFGB. If you camp in bear country, "bear-resistant" should mean formal certification, not a strong latch. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee maintains the recognized testing program in North America.
If you sit between two sizes, choose the smaller one. A full small cooler outperforms a half-full large one, and it is easier to carry.
Vaccines and many pharmaceuticals must stay between 2°C and 8°C. A general-purpose cooler with loose ice can drop below 2°C next to frozen packs, and freezing can damage some vaccines. WHO specifications address this with pre-conditioned cool-packs and defined test conditions (WHO/PQS/E004/CB01.3). Buyers in pharma logistics should state the required temperature range and hold time in the inquiry so the insulation thickness can be matched to it. Consumer-grade retention claims should not be treated as validated performance.
